Where Orchards Meet Open Minds

Seven miles west of Santa Rosa, in the rolling hills of Sonoma County, sits California’s most delightfully independent small town. Gravenstein apple orchards share the land with organic vineyards, sculpture-lined streets, and redwood-shaded parks. The same Gold Ridge soil that inspired Luther Burbank’s life work still grows something extraordinary here.

Spend a Sunday morning at the farmers market on the downtown Plaza, graze your way through The Barlow’s open-air food and maker district, sip bubbles at Iron Horse Vineyards, then wander Florence Avenue where scrap metal has been reborn as whimsical front-yard sculpture.

the plant wizard’s workshop

Luther Burbank’s Gold Ridge Farm

In 1885, the father of modern horticulture bought land on Sebastopol’s Gold Ridge and turned it into his great outdoor laboratory. For roughly forty years, Burbank ran large-scale plant experiments here, introducing more than 800 varieties of fruits, flowers, grains, and vegetables over his career — among them many of California’s plums and prunes, the Shasta daisy, and the ancestor of the famous Russet Burbank potato.

Since 1974, the Western Sonoma County Historical Society has preserved the surviving three acres of the farm, now on the National Register of Historic Places. The historic cottage, gardens, and living Burbank plant specimens connect visitors directly to Sebastopol’s most famous legacy.

“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine to the soul.” — Luther Burbank

The Town Where Junk Becomes Art

Since 1997, sculptor Patrick Amiot has been welding salvaged metal — hubcaps, washing machines, old truck parts — into larger-than-life dogs, mermaids, farmers, firefighters, and rocket ships, each one brought to life in brilliant color by painter Brigitte Laurent. Their work fills front yards along Florence Avenue and pops up all over downtown, turning an ordinary residential street into one of Sonoma County’s most beloved free attractions.

🔧 Start on Florence Avenue A few blocks of front-yard sculpture, minutes from downtown. Give yourself an hour.
Built from Salvage Every piece begins as scrap metal headed for the dump — then gets a second life.
🎨 Painted by Brigitte Amiot sculpts, Brigitte Laurent paints. The color is half the magic.

Friendly reminder: Florence Avenue is a residential street. Enjoy the sculptures from the sidewalk, park respectfully nearby, and keep it mellow. That’s the Sebastopol way.

Visiting Sebastopol

🚗Getting Here

Highways 116 and 12 meet right downtown. Sebastopol sits 7 miles west of Santa Rosa, about an hour north of the Golden Gate Bridge, and roughly 20 minutes from Sonoma County Airport (STS).

Heading onward? The Russian River and the Sonoma Coast are both an easy, gorgeous drive west.

🚴Getting Around

Downtown is compact and walkable. The Joe Rodota Trail gives cyclists a flat, car-free ride to Santa Rosa, and Sonoma County Transit buses serve town.

Pro tip: come on a Sunday morning when the farmers market takes over the Plaza, then make a day of it.
