"Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers, tadpoles, mud turtles, elderberries, wild strawberries, and acorns." — Luther Burbank, Gold Ridge Farm, Sebastopol
Where Orchards Meet Open Minds
Nestled seven miles west of Santa Rosa in the rolling hills of Sonoma County, Sebastopol is California's most delightfully independent small town. Gravenstein apple orchards share land with organic vineyards, Buddhist centers, and world-class sculpture gardens. The same soil that inspired Luther Burbank's life work still grows something extraordinary here.
From the Sunday farmers' market downtown to the Barlow's craft beer and artisan food hall, from Iron Horse Vineyards to the Hallberg Butterfly Gardens, Sebastopol rewards the curious, the creative, and the community-minded.
Use this directory to discover local businesses, upcoming events, restaurants, parks, and the services that make Sebastopol one of the most livable communities in all of Northern California.
Luther Burbank's Gold Ridge Farm
The father of modern horticulture chose Sebastopol's Gold Ridge soil to conduct his most important experimental work. For over 50 years, Burbank developed new varieties of plums, apples, roses, dahlias, lilies, and more than 800 other plants that changed agriculture worldwide.
Today the Gold Ridge Experiment Farm on Ross Road is maintained by the Western Sonoma County Historical Society. The historic cottage, experimental orchard, and sweeping gardens remain open for tours, connecting visitors directly to Sebastopol's most famous botanical legacy.
